Rachel Lowe: conductor’s time to reach the hype

I’m still thinking about her performance at AAMI Park dishing up what the crowd had been hoping for: success.

There was a lot of hype around Lowe when she burst onto the scene, including bagging her so-far single Matildas cap at 17-years-old. Her ability to create in the final third and dynamism was a shot of optimism.

However, she struggled to reach the perhaps too high bar some (regrettably probably me) set out. This was particularly noticeable during her spell at Sydney FC. While the stats are kind with nine goals from 47 games in three seasons – she wasn’t a lynch pin or even essential in a dominant Sky Blue side.

A move to Victory has breathed new life into the attacking midfielder. She showed promise in her opening games of this season – but shouldered the role of conductor against Adelaide to gift Victory their first win of the season.

Lowe was in the middle of everything and an absolute joy to watch. She reminded us of the promise of the world class player we all thought she would become following her debut with Western Sydney – before spending a year off the radar at UCLA Bruins.

So, here’s to a new era for Lowe. May we enjoy her new chapter that’s showing the promise of living up to that early career hype.

PS – Wikipedia informs me that Rachel Lowe and I share a birthday. So happy flaming 23rd for next weekend 🥳
