We’re back to rolling the dice, welcoming back Prediction Thursdays.
Ahead of each round, I’ll try and predict what will happen. Some of it will be educated, others will be like dreaming of cooking the perfect steak… I’ve yet to figure out the proper formula but will stumble into something delicious every now and then.
This weekend’s predictions is purely fuelled on good vibes and outlandish claims. Enjoy
Western United v Wellington Phoenix
To start the season it will be a goal scorers delight. Don’t worry about the pair both traditionally building seasons from stubborn defences, it’ll be forwards who prove their worth to get the Dub off to the right start.
Despite all the change at Wellington, I’m giving them the edge in an otherwise insane game. The returning Grace Jale will be the difference and her goal the decider.
Score: 3-4 win for Wellington
Central Coast Mariners v Sydney FC
Sydney are notorious slow starters and the Mariners have sweet revenge on their mind following last season’s semi-final loss. It’ll be tense and angsty with just one goal the difference.
A Jessika Nash header after the 80th minute will be enough to seal victory for Central Coast.
Score: 1-0 win to Mariners
Canberra United v Brisbane Roar
The off-season kicked off hectic for Canberra United, and it’ll be that flavour of the pitch too. Michelle Heyman will make a swift return from her international duties to sink a hattrick fueled purely on jet-lag and a rowdy crowd in the capital.
While Brisbane will be left shocked after a couple quick goals. They’ll try to mount a late comeback, but it’ll be the aged-old tale of too little too late.
Score: 3-1 loss for Brisbane
Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory
A total dead rubber in South Australia but one that is pure entertainment for the neutral and heartbreak for respective supporters. The crossbar will get a work out, open goals missed all the while both sides try to strike on the counter in an open-ended affair.
Both coaches will walk off the pitch muttering under their breath “we should’ve won this game”.
Score: 0-0 draw
Melbourne City v Perth Glory
A gutsy performance from Perth will come undone by two quick goals in succession around the hour mark from Melbourne City. It’ll come as a sting for Glory working on a new game plan under a new coach. City remain the real deal and will simply do enough to get the job done in traditional boring style.
Score: 2-0 City win
Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers
The two New South Wales sides will equal each other out across the park for a tense and gritty game. Expect yellow cards, crunching tackles and audacity to argue with the referee in a fiery affair. Last season’s stand-out Sophie Harding will take off where she left off, scoring early but by no means settling nerves as it’ll spark wave upon wave of Jets attacks.
Jets will suffer a frustrating day in the office and will be unable to pull back the difference, including being denied a goal due to a marginal off-side call.
Score: 0-1 Jets lose
