Prediction Thursday R3: Double dose of derbies

We’re back and what a wild start to the season already. Here’s a total punt at how round three could go.

Brisbane Roar v Perth Glory

Both riding high from hard fought victories but one will come crashing down to earth. A Friday night at Brisbane? I’m going to notch this one to Brisbane and their ferocious midfield. They might struggle to score, but they’ll tame Glory.

Result: 1-0 Brisbane win

Sydney v Western Sydney Wanderers

It always goes down in the Sydney derby and this will be no different. No love will be lost with both sides wanting their first win of the season. Purely for the vibes, Sydney will blow a 2-0 lead and Sophie Harding will strike a dagger into Sky Blue hearts when the Wanderers come from behind to send Sydney spiralling. (Which look, don’t fret, Sydney are always slow starters)

Result: 3-2 WSW win

Melbourne City v Central Coast Mariners

Only a sledge hammer could split these two. The Mariners will have to be more clinical but so long as they can – it’ll be a tit-for-tat as City’s defence has been leaky in an otherwise commanding start to the season.

Result: 3-3 draw

Canberra United v Adelaide United

United in name and united they will entertain full of confidence. Again, a home crowd advantage gives the green team the edge, but it’ll be tight. One of those games you can’t look away from, despite the low-scoring.

Result: 1-0 Canberra win

Newcastle v Wellington

This feels tense like a bad banana muffin. But, unlike that dessert, there will be a winner. The lid will lift after the first goal and Wellington could run away with it to the dismay of the Jets.

Result: 3-1 Wellington win

Melbourne Victory v Western United

Back-to-back Melbourne derbies for Victory and they’ll be determined to grow from last week. It won’t be an easy task against a solid WU. Both sides have the ingredients to really push for silverware this season, but neither have really pulled it together for a full, proper 90 minutes. The ebb and flow of the game will wobble more than jelly, but purely to not repeat the mistakes of last week, Victory will edge United.

Result: 2-1 Victory win
