Orlando Pride have withdrawn from the shortened competition to be played in Utah after several players and staff test positive for coronavirus. It’s a massive blow, that leaves open so many questions.
Running any sport competition in the USA was always going to be difficult right now. So many States and different approaches to restrictions.
Starting a witch hunt of “who dun it” isn’t the answer. This pandemic is far too clever and contagious. Whoever is sick and unwell, we just need to hope for a quick and uncomplicated recovery.
Practically what this means is Orlando players, including Matilda Emily Van Egmond, will miss the chance to play football for a long time. EVE is perhaps in a slightly different position than her teammates, missing a “smaller chunk” of time away from the park given her “off-season” with Melbourne City in the W-League.
The Challenge Cup was tipped to begin this weekend. What happens now could well depend on the health of other squads or the collective agreement of the players on whether to forge ahead with play.
